The 1985 African Basketball Championship , the thirteenth African Basketball Championship , took place between December 20 and 28, 1985 in Abidjan , Ivory Coast , which hosted the championship for the first time. The winner was the Ivory Coast national team , which won the title for the second time. In the final Angola could be defeated. For the first time a team from Kenya took part in the tournament.
In the preliminary round there were two groups (groups A and B) of six teams. Each team played against each other exactly once, so that each team played exactly five games (a total of 30 games were played). There were two points for each win and one point for a defeat. The two teams with the highest points moved into the semi-finals. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decided . Since the first three teams in Group A were tied and Angola won against the Central African Republic, the Central African Republic against the Ivory Coast and the Ivory Coast against Angola, the relative basket ratio of these three games decided. Since Angola with +3 and Ivory Coast with −1 had the better basket ratio than the Central African Republic (−2), they moved into the semi-finals, Angola as group first and Ivory Coast as group runner-up. Angola played against Egypt and the Ivory Coast against Senegal for a place in the final. The third placed played for fifth place, the fourth placed seventh place, the fifth placed played in ninth place and the last group played out eleventh place.
