The AfroBasket 2009 ( shortly : Afrobasket 2009 ) is the 25th edition of this tournament and found in from 5 to 15 August 2009 Libyan capital Tripoli and in Benghazi instead. Half of the preliminary rounds took place in the African Union Arena and half in the Suliman Ad-Dharrath Arena . The knockout games of the final round took place with the exception of the placement round for places nine to twelve, with the participation of the Libyan teamwas held in Benghazi, entirely in the arena of the capital. The medal winners of the tournament qualified directly for the 2010 World Cup in Turkey.
Host Libya last took part in a continental finals in 1978 and could no longer qualify in sport. At least the national selection reached the second group stage in the home title fights and was able to defeat the North African-Arab "brothers" Egypt and Morocco and take eleventh place in addition to a victory over South Africa . Angola won its sixth title win in a row with no loss in the tournament. In addition to silver medal winners Ivory Coast , Tunisia also qualified for the 2010 World Cup. This was the first medal win in this competition for the team from the neighboring Libyan state since the 1970s and meant the first qualification of the Tunisian selection for a global final.

At the tournament, a preliminary round in four groups of four teams each was held as a round-robin tournament. The bottom of the group played from 13th to 16th in a placement round. The three best in the group qualified for an intermediate round with two groups of six teams each, taking with them all their preliminary round results, in which they played against the teams in the other preliminary round groups. The two worst teams in each of the two intermediate round groups played out places nine to twelve in a placement round. The four best teams of the two second round groups qualified for the final round, in which they in knockout system playing off the medals. The losers of the games of the quarterfinals played from places five to eight in a placement round, while the losers of the games of the semifinals in the "small final" not only for the bronze medal at this tournament, but also for the remaining starting place for the final round of the 2010 World Cup played. The winners of the semi-finals were qualified for the 2010 World Cup and played for the gold medal in the final.
