The Cape Verdean men's national basketball team represents Cape Verde at international basketball matches. After the Cape Verdean selection of men played no role in Africa until the mid-1990s and had never qualified for a continental final of the African Championship, it had qualified in five of the nine final rounds from 1997 until 2013. In 2007 he surprisingly won the bronze medal in the African Championship. In the following year 2008 there was therefore still the opportunity to qualify for the basketball tournament at the 2008 Olympic Games at the qualifying tournament in Athens . After two preliminary round defeats at this tournament, however, they missed the first participation in a global finals.

In addition to the professionals Jeff Xavier and Walter Tavares, who are active in Spain , Elvis Évora , Carlos Andrade , João Gomes and the no longer active Carlos Lisboa are among the most famous basketball players born in Cape Verde. The latter occur or occurred in international games for the Portuguese selection of the former "mother country".
