The South African men's national basketball team represents South Africa at international basketball matches. Because of the apartheid policy, the South African association was unable to become a member of the FIBA world association for a long time . After racial segregation ended in 1992, the association became a member of international associations and the men's selection qualified for the first time in 1995 for a continental final of the African Basketball Championships . In the following years, southern Africa was overshadowed by the dominant African national team from Angola . Together with the Mozambican selection of the neighboring country, they mostly occupied the lower places in the final round. The best place was ninth place at the 2003 African Cup of Nations , which was still far from qualifying for a global finals. After eight finals in a row, the South African selection could no longer qualify for the African Championship 2013 and was not given a starting place in the form of a " wildcard " from the continental association FIBA Africa .
