The AfroBasket 2011 ( shortly : Afrobasket 2011 ) is the 26th edition of this tournament and found in the 17 to 28 August 2011 Madagascan capital Antananarivo instead. All games were played in the sports hall of the Université d'Antananarivo . The winner of the tournament qualified directly for the 2012 Olympic basketball tournament , the other two medal winners still had the opportunity to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games via the pre-Olympic qualifying tournament.
The Ivorian metropolis of Abidjan was originally intended to be the venue for the final round. After the political unrest in Ivory Coast, it was decided at the end of April 2011 that the final round should take place at the replacement site in Madagascar. The final round was finally held at the next African Cup in 2013 in Abidjan.
After six consecutive tournament victories, Angola lost the final against Tunisia , which won its first title with " MVP " Salah Mejri and qualified for the Olympic Games for the first time after having qualified for the World Championships for the first time a year earlier . While Angola did not qualify for the Olympic Games a year later, bronze medalist Nigeria , which defeated the originally intended host Ivory Coast in the "small final" , later qualified for the Olympic basketball tournament.

At the tournament, a preliminary round in four groups of four teams each was held as a round-robin tournament. The placements in the preliminary round groups resulted in a seeding list for the final knockout rounds , in which in the round of 16 the first knockout round, the four best in the group initially played against one of the four bottom groups and the four runners-up against one of the four Third party. According to the preliminary round results, a quotient was formed after the losers of the round of 16 played another placement game. The losers of the quarterfinals played from five to eight in a placement round. The losers of the semi-finals played in the "small final" for the bronze medal and a remaining starting place for the Olympic qualification tournament. The winners of the semi-finals played for the gold medal and the direct starting position for the Olympic basketball tournament, with the loser in the final having another opportunity to qualify via the pre-Olympic tournament.
