The 1978 African Championship , the ninth African Basketball Championship , took place between December 24, 1977 and January 1, 1978 in Dakar , Senegal , where the championship was held for the second time. The winner was the national team of Senegal , which won the title for the third time. For the first time teams from Mauritania and Gambias took part in the tournament.

In the preliminary round the game was played in two groups of five teams each. Each team played against each other exactly once, so that each team played exactly four games (a total of 20 games were played). There were two points for each win and one point for a defeat. The two teams with the highest points moved into the semi-finals. In this, the first-placed teams played against the second-placed teams in the other group. The third-placed players played for fifth, the fourth-placed seventh and the fifth-placed and bottom of the group finished ninth.
