The women's African basketball championship in 1986 , the tenth women's African basketball championship , took place between December 17 and 27, 1986 in the Mozambican capital Maputo , where the championship was held for the first time. The winner was the Zaires national team , which was unbeaten for the second time and won the title. For the first time a team from Kenya took part in the tournament.

In the preliminary round was in the form of a round-robin tournament . Each team played against each other exactly once, so each team played four games (a total of ten games were played). There were two points for each win and one point for a defeat. The team with the best points was the women's African basketball champions in 1983. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decided . The team with the most points became the 1986 Women's African Championship.
