The 1972 African Basketball Championship , the sixth African Basketball Championship , took place between December 25, 1971 and January 2, 1972 in Dakar , Senegal , which hosted the championship for the first time. The winner was the national team of Senegal , who defeated the defending champions United Arab Republic in the final and thus won the title for the second time. For the first time teams from Cameroon , Madagascar , Togo and Nigeria took part in the tournament. Thus, a record number of twelve teams took part in the tournament.

The preliminary round was played in two groups (group A and B), each with six teams. Each team played against each other exactly once, so that each team played exactly five games (a total of 30 games were played). There were two points for each win and one point for a defeat. The first and second placed in a group advanced to the semi-finals, with the first placed against the second placed in the respective other group. The third placed in both groups played for fifth place, the fourth placed seventh place, the fifth placed ninth place and the last placed eleven place.
