The 1974 African Basketball Championship for women , the fourth African Basketball Championship for women , took place between December 24 and 31, 1974 in the Tunisian capital, Tunis , which hosted the championship for the first time. The winner was the Senegalese national team , which was able to win the title for the first time, undefeated. In the final, the host could be beaten. For the first time a team from Tunisia and Nigeria took part in the tournament.

In the preliminary round there were two groups (group A and group B) of five (group A) and four (group B) teams. Each team played against each other in the respective group exactly once, so that each team played four (Group A) or three (Group B) games (a total of 16 games were played). There were two points for each win and one point for a defeat. The two teams with the highest points moved into the semi-finals. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decided . The fourth and fifth places played from places five to eight. Algeria was the last in Group A to automatically finish last of the tournament and finished ninth overall.
