The 1989 African Basketball Championship , the fifteenth African Basketball Championship , took place between December 16 and 27, 1989 in Luanda , Angola , where the championship was held for the first time. The winner was the hosting Angolan national basketball team , which won the title for the first time. In the final, the Egyptian national team , which failed for the second time in a row in the final, was beaten. For the first time a team from Zambia took part in the tournament.
In the preliminary round there were two groups (group A and B) of five (group A) and six (group B) teams. Each team played against each other exactly once, so that each team played exactly four (Group A) or five games (Group B, with the exception of Kenya (four games) and Ivory Coast (six games)) (a total of 25 games were played) . There were two points for each win and one point for a defeat. The two teams with the highest points moved into the semi-finals. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decided . Since the teams placed second to fourth were tied in Group A and Algeria won against the Central African Republic, the Central African Republic against Mali and Mali against Algeria, the relative basket ratio of these three games decided. Since Mali had the better basket ratio with +16 compared to Algeria (+3) and the Central African Republic (−19), the team moved into the semi-finals as second in the group. Senegal played against Egypt and Angola against Mali for a place in the final. The third placed played for fifth place, the fourth placed seventh place and the fifth placed ninth place. Kenya landed last in Group B in eleventh place and was thus last of the tournament.
