The 1970 African Championship , the fifth African Basketball Championship , took place between March 9 and 15, 1970 in Alexandria , United Arab Republic , which was the second time the championship was held. The winner was the national team of the United Arab Republic , which defeated the defending champion Senegal in the final and thus achieved the third success in its third participation. For the first time, the team from Somalia also took part in the tournament.

In the preliminary round there were two groups (groups A and B), with four teams in group A and three in group B. Each team played against each other exactly once, so that each team played exactly three games (group A) or two games (group B) (a total of nine games were played). There were two points for each win and one point for a defeat. The first and second placed in a group advanced to the semi-finals, with the first placed against the second placed in the respective other group. The third placed in both groups played for fifth place. As fourth in Group A, Somalia was automatically seventh and last.
