The 1983 African Basketball Championship , the twelfth African Basketball Championship , took place between December 19 and 28, 1983 in Alexandria , Egypt , which was the fourth time the championship was held. The winner was the national team of Egypt , which won the title for the fifth time. In the final Angola could be defeated. For the first time a team from Liberia took part in the tournament.
In the preliminary round there were two groups (groups A and B) of five teams. Each team played against each other exactly once, so that each team played exactly four (Group A) games (a total of 20 games were played). There were two points for each win and one point for a defeat. The two teams with the highest points moved into the semi-finals. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decided . Since Angola won against Algeria, Algeria against the Central African Republic and the Central African Republic against Angola in Group A, the relative basket ratio of these three games decided. Since Angola had the best basket ratio with +4, it moved into the semi-finals together with Egypt, who played against Ivory Coast, and played against Senegal there. The third placed played for fifth, the fourth placed seventh and the fifth placed ninth.
