The 1992 African Basketball Championship , the sixteenth African Basketball Championship , took place between December 18, 1992 and January 8, 1993 in Cairo , Egypt , which hosted the championship for the fifth time. The winner was Angola , which was able to defend its title and thus win the title for the second time. Senegal could be defeated in the final .
The preliminary round was played in two groups (group A and B) of six (group A) and five (group B) teams. Each team played against each other exactly once, so that each team played exactly five (Group A) or four games (a total of 25 games were played). There were two points for each win and one point for a defeat. The two teams with the highest points moved into the semi-finals. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decided . In the semifinals Senegal played against Egypt and Angola against Mali for a place in the final. The third placed played for fifth place and the fourth placed for seventh place and they fifth placed for ninth place. The Ivory Coast ended up as the last in Group A to rank eleven overall and was thus last of the tournament.
