The Walanae ( Indonesian : Sungai Walanae ) is an approximately 150 km long river in the southwestern arm of the island of Sulawesi . The catchment area of the Walanae is 478,932.72 hectares and touches areas of the administrative districts ( Kabupaten ) Maros , Bone , Soppeng and Wajo .

The river has its source in the southern part of the province of South Sulawesi north of the extinct volcano Lompobatang (2,871 m high) and from there stretches northward to Sengkang , where it takes up the outflow from Lake Danau Tempe and turns to the southeast, to finally enter the Gulf of Bone to flow. Mainly the Bugis people settle in its catchment area . a. is known for its stilt houses. It is not uncommon for the walanae to overflow its banks.

Tributaries are Batu Puteh, Malanroe, Mario, Minraleng, and Sanrego. Coming from Watansoppeng , a tributary flows into the Walanae from the west. The river valley is framed by a western mountain range (up to 1650 m altitude) and an eastern mountain range (Mountains von Bone, up to 800 m altitude). The river is spanned by several suspension bridges.

Presumably Pliocene fossils (Archidiskodon-Celebochoerus-Fauna) and Pleistocene stone artifacts of the so-called Tjabenge culture (named after the Indonesian town of Cabenge near the main sites) were found on the bank terraces .
