The Danau Tempe is a lake in the administrative district ( Kabupaten ) Wajo in the province of South Sulawesi , Indonesia . The lake is about 7 km from the town (Kota) of Sengkang . The lake is home to rare freshwater fish species. Another characteristic feature are the fishermen's floating houses on the lake. The region around the lake is considered to be the region of origin of the Bugis .
Fisherman Festival
Every year on August 23, a fishermen's festival ( called Maccera Tappareng by the Buginese people ) takes place on the lake . The ritual is intended to purify the lake. For this purpose, cattle are cut up. In addition, boat races, kite flying and regional miss and Mister elections ( Anak Dara and Kalollo ) are held, as well as traditional music and dance performances by transvestites ( Bissu ). The participants wear traditional Buginese clothing, the Baju Bodo .
