Transport and infrastructure

Sengkang is connected to Makassar and other cities in the south of Sulawesi by good roads that can be used all year round. The bus station is located in the center of the city, but the buses do not run according to a fixed timetable. In the urban area, the Walanae River is spanned by several narrow suspension bridges, over which no cars can drive, but motorcycle taxis can. In addition to a hospital and two hotels, Sengkang also has very good shopping facilities, including the Jalan HA Mori, the Jalan Kartini and the Jalan Jend. Sudirman are the main shopping streets.

particularities

The town is the center of traditional Buginese silk weaving. However, the silk is not made in Sengkang itself, but further south in the vicinity of the town of Watangsoppeng.

Most of the residents of Sengkang are Muslims, whose mosques shape the cityscape, but there is also a Protestant church ( Gereja Toraja ) built in 1964 and renovated in 2013 .

In the lower parts of the city by the river, many houses were built on stilts. A popular meeting place for the locals is the Taman Padduppa park on the Walanae River with a pavilion, from where a suspension bridge leads to the western part of the city. From the bridge there is an impressive view of the city center, especially in the evening sun.

Only a few kilometers from the city center is the Danau Tempe lake , which is surrounded by swamps and is known for its "floating villages". They are called Rumah terapung in Indonesian and are easily reached from Sengkang by motorboat. To the north-west of the city there is a forest area with swamps that has been declared a nature reserve.
