German fruit genebank

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The German Fruit Genebank (DGO) is a decentrally organized network for the preservation of old fruit varieties . It consists of legal and natural persons who have formed a network and appear under a common logo. The network partners support each other in maintaining product ranges and managing collections through joint training and further education as well as joint public relations work.

With the establishment of the German Fruit Genebank, the Federal Republic of Germany is implementing the National Program for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Plant Genetic Resources in Agricultural and Horticultural Crops from 2002. The coordination center of the German Fruit Genebank is the Institute for Breeding Research on Horticultural Crops and Fruit at the Federal Research Institute for Cultivated Plants in Dresden-Pillnitz ( Julius Kühn Institute ).

Within the DGO there are gene bank networks for the fruit types apples , strawberries , sweet and sour cherries . Networks for the fruit types plum , soft fruit , wild fruit and pears are being planned.

aims

The German fruit genebank serves to coordinate the diverse activities of various institutions that are committed to the conservation of genetic resources in fruit species. The aim is to collect fruit types and preserve them in a scientific, long-term, sustainable and cost-efficient manner. Particular attention is paid to German varieties, including new breeds, to varieties with socio-cultural, local or historical reference to Germany and varieties with fruit-growing characteristics that are important for research and breeding purposes. The authenticity check of the types of fruit plays an important role. This is done on the one hand through pomological assessment of the varieties obtained and through molecular genetic analyzes.

Another goal of the German Fruit Genebank is to promote the use of the preserved fruit varieties. This is to be achieved through the fruit-growing examination and characterization, the nationwide inventory and documentation as well as the provision of propagation material to third parties.

Collection preserving partners

The variety collection of the German Genebank Fruit consists of the sub-collections of the participating network partners who maintain the collection. Collection-holding partners are federal and state institutions, districts, municipalities as well as associations and individuals. The partners voluntarily undertake to maintain, evaluate and document their collections and to make propagation material available to third parties.

Collection preserving partners are:

  • Institute for Breeding Research on Horticultural Crops and Fruit (ZGO-D) at the Julius Kühn Institute (JKI) - Federal Research Institute for Cultivated Plants, Dresden
  • State Institute for Agriculture, Forestry and Horticulture Saxony-Anhalt, Bernburg
  • Competence Center Fruit Growing Lake Constance, Ravensburg
  • Agricultural schools Triesdorf, Weidenbach
  • NABU -Naturschutzstation Haus Wildenrath eV, Wegberg
