action

A passenger ship, the “Elmtree” (elm tree), was on its way to South America when suddenly a presumed epidemic, the pneumonic plague, broke out. It is immediately decided that the crew and passengers have to go into quarantine to prevent the possible spread of the disease. The ship is supposed to head for the small island of San Luis Rey, located in front of the destination port of Puerto Guara, and the people on board are to be placed in the care of the quarantine manager there, Ramón Orveda. On land, women are immediately separated from men. Only the German adventurer Peter Diercksen, who had malaria and who was supposed to lead Professor Cameron's expedition tour into the jungle, and the young ship steward Tobi remained on board . In order to be able to carry out this job, Diercksen absolutely wants to avoid a quarantine-related forced stay on San Luis Rey and therefore tries to make his way to Puerto Guara on his own. He and Tobi are picked up and also taken to the quarantine station.

Here he meets the local nurse Dolores, who soon falls in love with Peter. But he seizes the opportunity and begins, separated only by a wooden fence, to flirt violently with the American journalist Helen Roeder, who he likes better. The brawny Orveda as the master of the island turns out to be a despot, who extends the quarantine period as the mood takes him. The government will soon send its own medical examiner, a Dr. Pérez to check the internees' health on the spot. In fact, no disease can be detected, not even in Diercksen's. However, due to a faux pas, his finding receives the entry of another man. Peter, who has lost his heart to the American, wants to get rid of the clinging Dolores and sends Tobi in for it. The rejected person wants to take revenge for Peter's behavior and therefore sends Peter's medical files with the wrong results to Prof. Cameron, so that he wants to forego Diercksen's participation in the expedition. Now Peter Diercksen also learns what is in his file: he has, he reads, a serious heart defect and will only live another six months. With a heavy heart, the German adventurer separates from the US journalist in order to spare her the great pain of separation in the near future.

Instead, Diercksen now turns to her, the nurse, as Dolores intended, and engages her as his nurse for the time that still remains for him. Both travel to Buenos Aires. There Peter and Helen Roeder meet again, who found out about Tobi von Diercksen's state of health. In order to finally get rid of the US journalist, the South American claims that Peter is actually healthy and, moreover, is her lover. Diercksen can overhear part of the conversation and now knows how things are really going with him. He tries to fix the break with Helen in a discussion, but she is not ready for any reconciliation. In the meantime, Prof. Cameron and his family have penetrated deep into the bush on their expedition, where they have been pinched by natives. The expedition participants can escape to a log cabin and entrench themselves there. Peter, who is now no longer in the big city, wants to join Cameron and the others and takes part in an aid operation as an observation pilot. Diercksen makes his way to the log cabin and finds the badly wounded professor there. The German and the few survivors bravely defend the hut until the helpers arrive. Among them are Helen and Dolores, who have since spoken out. The wounded are helped and Peter and Helen finally get together.
