Alexander Engels
Gustav Alexander Engels (born December 6, 1871 in Breslau , † February 21, 1933 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German theater actor .
Life
Engels, son of the merchant Wilhelm and Clara Engels, b. Stendell, after graduating from Real-Gymnasium in Thorn (originally he was supposed to become a theologian) and taking dramatic lessons from Heinrich Oberländer , started his stage career in Elberfeld, where he made his debut as "Leontes". In 1895 he came to Breslau (inaugural role “Faust”) and in 1896 to the Hofburgtheater, where he performed as “Stauffacher” and “Alba” in Egmont on April 16 and 18 . Engels stayed at this court stage for three years.
Although he knew how to meritably fit into the ensemble, he was not given the opportunity to work in the desired sphere of activity and so in 1899 he became a member of the Hamburg Thaliatheater (inaugural role "Hans Lange").
However, he left the same again after only one year and joined the Association of the City Theater in Bremen in 1900, where he introduced himself as "Alba" in Egmont and since then has been a popular actor in the field of the hero fathers and Pères nobles.
Engels was an actor of artistic initiative who placed the same emphasis on the spoken word as the accompanying game, and had good results in both directions. The following should be emphasized: "Lear", "Wallenstein", "Meister Anton" etc.
Later he worked at the court theater in Braunschweig.
Engels married Magdalene Hüller, the daughter of the Hamburg city architect Ferdinand Hüller , on July 5, 1898 and had a daughter with her, Klara (* 1900).
