Salomon Hermann Mosenthal
Salomon Hermann Mosenthal , from 1871 Knight von Mosenthal (born January 14, 1821 in Kassel , Electorate of Hesse ; † February 17, 1877 in Vienna , Austria-Hungary ) was a German playwright and librettist.
Life
Mosenthal came from an impoverished German-Jewish merchant family, had been literary since his school days and moved to Vienna in 1842. In the year of the March Revolution in 1848, he published his popular play Deborah , which was premiered in Hamburg in 1849 and brought the poet a worldwide success. His most popular drama depicts the unhappy love of a young, beautiful Jewish woman for a Christian and primarily addresses the question of whether and how the Christian majority and the Jewish minority could live together in an enlightened state:
- “And become Christian and Jew - be human.
- If brotherly love is our only faith,
- Then the hour of the Messiah will come. " ( Deborah , 4th act, 1st appearance)
Mosenthal's best-known work is still his libretto for Otto Nicolai's comic opera The Merry Women of Windsor .
His international popularity opened Salomon Herrmann Mosenthal the door to an unusually successful for a Jew of his time career: in 1849 he received in absentia doctorate in University of Marburg due to a submission of his treatise entitled On the direction of poetry in ancient and modern times and In recognition of his already published works, in 1850 Mosenthal was accepted into the ministerial civil service, in 1867 he received the title of Imperial Councilor, four years later the Order of the Iron Crown and the title of Knight.
In 1877 Salomon Hermann Ritter von Mosenthal died in Vienna at the age of 56 and was buried in the Jewish cemetery in Währing . In 1888 the Mosenthalweg in Vienna- Währing (18th district) was named after him.
