Paul-Jules Barbier (born March 8, 1825 in Paris , † January 16, 1901 there ) was a French theater poet and librettist .
life and work
Jules Barbier made his debut with the versed drama Un poète (1847), the success of which encouraged him to continue his dramatic work. He then joined forces with other poets, following the custom of the French playwrights, and in connection with them created a number of dramas, comedies and vaudevilles such as Jenny l'ouvrière (1850) and La loterie du mariage (1868). Later he and his colleague Michel Carré became the permanent librettist of the Opéra-Comique , on which stage he introduced the so-called Greek genre with his piece Galathée (1852, music by Victor Massé ). He wrote the libretti of some of the most popular operas of the 19th century, especially many of his friend Charles Gounod's operas .
The events of 1870/71 also inspired Barbier to lyrical effusions, which appeared under the title Le Franc-tireur, chants du guerre (1871). His drama Jeanne d'Arc , with music by Gounod, had an honorable success in 1873 at the Théâtre de la Gaîté , which rose to a triumph in 1890 when Sarah Bernhardt took the title role in the work that was reworked for her at the Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin played. Less addressed in 1896 was the historical drama Lucile Desmoulins . In 1879 his Théâtre en vers was published in two volumes. In La Gerbe in 1884 he summarized his poems published since 1842.
For many years Barbier was the chairman of the Société des auteurs dramatiques . In October 1887 he took over the provisional management of the Paris Opéra-Comique. His Fleur blessée appeared in 1890 . Tableau mosaic . In 1898 he renounced the Officer's Cross of the Legion of Honor , which had been awarded to him in 1880 , because Émile Zola was excluded because of the Dreyfus affair . He died in Paris in 1901 at the age of 75.
