Theodor Hell
Theodor Hell , pseudonym for Carl Gottfried Theodor Winkler , (born February 9, 1775 in Waldenburg (Saxony) , † September 24, 1856 in Dresden ) was a German writer , poet , translator and publicist .
Life
Hell studied law and history in Wittenberg, and in 1796 was employed by the Dresden City Court. 1801 Registrar at the Secret Archives, 1805 Real Secret Archives Registrar, 1812 Secret Secretary, 1813 Editor of the General Government Gazette, 1814 Theater Secretary, 1816 Secretary at the Royal Academy of Arts, 1825 Director of the Italian Opera, 1841 Vice Director of the Royal Court Theater. Hell had the title of a councilor . From 1841 he was a Freemason Grand Master of the Great State Lodge of Saxony . From 1817 to 1843 he was editor of the Dresdner Abend-Zeitung and from 1841 vice director of the royal court theater .
He was a close friend of Carl Maria von Weber and, together with Hinrich Lichtenstein, guardian of Weber's orphaned sons Max Maria and Alexander .
He was in frequent (letter) contact with writers of his time, for example with Agnes Franz and Pauline von Brochowska .
Hell belonged to the Dresdner Liederkreis .
