Waldtraut Lewin (born January 8, 1937 in Wernigerode , Province of Saxony , Prussia ; † May 20, 2017 in Berlin ) was a German writer , dramaturge and director .

Life

As the daughter of assimilated Jews, Lewin was threatened by the Nuremberg race laws from birth. Her parents' marriage had to be annulled for the protection of the father, who was not Jewish, in order to free them both from the offense of "racial disgrace". From March 1939, her grandfather Robert Lewin took over the girl's guardianship. Thanks to the prudence and fearlessness of their grandfather, the Lewin family managed to avoid persecution and survive the war.

After graduating from school, Waldtraut Lewin studied German , Latin and theater studies at the Humboldt University in Berlin until 1961 . In 1964 she graduated with a diploma in philosophy.

From 1961 to 1973, Waldtraut Lewin worked as a music dramaturge, opera translator and director at the Landestheater Halle . In 1970 she was awarded the Handel Prize of the Halle District Council for her musical work . In 1973 she took on a position as opera director and chief dramaturge for music theater at the Rostock Volkstheater . During her work as a dramaturge, she translated a total of sixteen Italian operas by Georg Friedrich Handel and wrote the libretto for the first East German rock opera Rosa Laub .

In 1971 Waldtraut Lewin published her first novel, Mr. Lucius and his black swan . Six years later she gave up her job in Rostock in order to devote herself to writing as a freelance writer. Since 1978 she has lived as a freelance author of novels, short stories, youth novels, historical youth novels (including Everything for Caesar ), biographies (including about Handel and Julius Caesar ), radio plays, libretti, screenplays and non-fiction books. In her final years she specialized in writing for teenagers.

Waldtraut Lewin was awarded the Lion Feuchtwanger Prize and the National Prize of the GDR for her literary work . From 1986 to 1990 she was a member of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin. From 1975 to November 1988 it was run by the GDR Ministry for State Security as IMS "Wald". There is an extensive file of their IM reports in the BStU archive .

The author Miriam Margraf (Hannah M. Margraf), with whom Lewin collaborated several times in literary terms, is her daughter.

Waldtraut Lewin died in Berlin in May 2017 at the age of 80.
