The Rosa Luxembourg Street is located in the Berlin district of Mitte . It was named on September 3, 1969 in honor of the communist politician Rosa Luxemburg who was murdered in 1919 .

Course and origin

The southern part - between Weydingerstraße and Dircksenstraße (Stadtbahn) - belonged to Kaiser-Wilhelm-Straße , planned from 1871 and laid out from 1885 , which continued beyond the Stadtbahn to the Spree and to the north in a straight line over today's Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz to should at least lead to today's Torstrasse. The Victoria Theater , located exactly on the axis of the street between Münzstraße and Hirtenstraße, was initially to be bypassed on both sides of the street like an island (based on the urban planning design by August Orth from 1871). When the theater was closed for economic reasons in 1891, however, the building could be demolished.

The northern part of the street - between Schönhauser Allee and Weydingerstraße / Bülowplatz - was laid out at the beginning of the 20th century when the Scheunenviertel was being renovated. It apparently initially bore the name Amalienstraße , which was taken over from one of the streets abandoned during the renovation, and was renamed Hankestraße in 1910 .

The Kaiser-Wilhelm-Straße was 1947-1969 Liebknechtstraße . After the urban reorganization in the area of the old city center, it was "divided" around the city railway: The south-western part (which had already been significantly changed by Albert Speer at the end of the 1930s for the east-west axis of the capital city planning ) was given a broad one A street breakthrough connected to Prenzlauer Allee and named as Karl-Liebknecht-Straße , the north-eastern part was combined with Hankestraße and this street was named after Rosa Luxemburg - whose name the former Bülowplatz had already had since 1947.

As a 30 km / h zone, the street runs predominantly in four lanes from Dircksenstrasse to Schönhauser Allee, thus forming a connection between Schönhauser Allee and Memhardstrasse and thus the bridge between the B 96a and B 5 .

Buildings and facilities

Several hotels and hostels, boutiques, galleries and restaurants have settled on the street. Although the proportion of offices has increased in recent years, the supply of apartments continues to predominate.

There are several architectural monuments along the road . These include the building ensemble built around 1935 with house numbers 25 and 27, as well as 22, 24, 26 and 28. Also the residential complex built in 1936 with house numbers 31, 33, 35 and 37.

The Volksbühne on Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz

The residential and commercial building at Rosa-Luxemburg-Strasse 39–41 was built in two construction phases in 1913 and 1928 and is now also a listed building . Together with the Volksbühne and the Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz underground station , the southern part of the building was one of the first completed structures on what was then Bülowplatz . It is a five- to six-storey building with a high pitched roof , a neoclassical design of the main facade and a white, clinker-clad courtyard facade .

Babylon cinema , Rosa-Luxemburg-Strasse 30

The Babylon cinema in the listed group of houses Rosa-Luxemburg-Straße 30 was built in 1927–1929 based on designs by the architect Hans Poelzig . The cinema originally had 1200 seats. In 1948 the foyer was initially redesigned with oval shapes, but after renewed construction work in 2001 it has the shape originally designed by Poelzig.

Another listed residential and commercial building designed by the architects Werner and Zaar extends over the properties at Rosa-Luxemburg-Strasse 9, 11 and 13 as well as Münzstrasse 2 and was completed in 1894.

The building at number 14, erected between 1908 and 1909 on behalf of the fuel factory owner C. A. F. Kahlbaum, is four-story and, for example, with its three -leaf or clover-leaf arches , is based on medieval architecture. The staircase is designed in Art Nouveau forms and the oak railing is decorated with carved floral motifs.

The building at number 15 also belongs to the group of houses built according to Poelzig's designs between 1927 and 1929. With its sober design, it forms a strong contrast to the neighboring historic apartment buildings from the 19th century.

The multi-family houses with the house numbers 16-18, 20, 21 and 23 were all built between 1875 and 1900 and are also under monument protection.

The seven-storey office building on the corner of Rosa-Luxemburg-Strasse 2 and Dircksenstrasse 35, built between 1928 and 1930, was designed by the architect Alfred Grenander and is characterized by its factual, modern architecture of the New Building . It housed the administration of the Berlin Nord-Süd-Bahn-AG , in the courtyard of the building (above the tunnel of the underground line U8) there is a converter plant that was built at the same time for the power supply of the line.

In addition, the building with the number 3 commissioned by the carpenter Heinrich Helms is one of the listed buildings on Rosa-Luxemburg-Strasse.

Events

In February 2008, the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation and the Initiative Mitte gegen Rechts protested against the establishment of a Thor Steinar shop, as a neo-Nazi meeting on a street with the name of Rosa Luxemburgs was incompatible. Residents and local businesses also joined the protests. To this end, the initiative permanently installed an art object in front of the shop as a protest action, which was sponsored by the integration officer Günter Piening and the district mayor Christian Hanke ( SPD ), as well as former Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker ( CDU ) and the SPD politician Wolfgang Thierse . After a legal dispute with the landlord of the house, Thor Steinar had to leave the shop in 2010.

Bicycle traffic

As part of a nationwide pilot trial by the Federal Ministry of Transport , the rule to turn right for cyclists was introduced in nine cities, including five intersections in Berlin, in April 2019 . One of these is the Torstrasse / Rosa-Luxemburg-Strasse intersection . There, free right turns from Torstrasse into Rosa-Luxemburg-Strasse were permitted.
