Theo Schumann Combo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Theo Schumann Combo (at times also Theo Schumann Formation ) was founded in 1961 by the composer, arranger and professional musician Theo Schumann . Schumann, actually a jazz musician , turned to modern dance music with this formation at the beginning of the beat movement, which was also rapidly expanding in the GDR . In addition to the Theo Schumann Combo, he also directed the Theo Schumann Orchestra. His formations combined international trends with their own musical means. Schumann's peculiar combination of beat, pop and jazz, as Calypso - Twist , beat Mambo , Big Beat Shake or Hully Gully referred -Rock, is considered the "archetype" of pop music in the GDR.

Band history

Founding cast:

  • Theo Schumann (band leader, piano, organ, saxophone)
  • Achim Gutsche (guitar, vocals)
  • Günter Püschner (guitar, vocals)
  • Klaus Berger (bass guitar)
  • Gerd Schönfelder (drums)

The Theo Schumann Combo was one of the first beat bands to have radio productions in early 1965 and was featured on the first GDR beat records, Big Beat I and Big Beat II , released in 1965 . The Watussi-Twist , Brockenhexe and Abenddämmerung were among the greatest successes . Like almost all East German beat bands, the Theo Schumann Combo also covered western models. In July 1965, the GDR broadcaster Sag, nie mehr, I love you zu mir , produced a version of the Beatless song I Should Have Known Better, and a month later That couldn't be true , the German version of The Last Time by the Rolling Stones . The Theo Schumann Combo was, besides Team 4, the only beat band that did this through the XI. During the plenary session of the Central Committee of the SED , the GDR authorities' tough action against the Beat movement survived unscathed and was still present in the media. At the beginning of 1966 the GDR record label Amiga released the first single and in 1969 the first long-playing record followed with the Theo Schumann combo.

Even after the end of the beat movement, Theo Schumann stuck to his musical concept, but replaced the band with new members. Gutsche, Püschner and Berger left the Theo Schumann Combo. Achim Türpke (bass guitar), Wilfried Peetz (guitar, vocals) and Petko Tomanow (flute, saxophone, piano, organ) were added. Further line-up changes followed in 1973 and 1976. The band also included Jochen Kittan (bass guitar), Manfred Schulz (drums), Frank-Endrik Moll (drums), Henry Kotowski (vocals), Kurt Richter (guitar, vocals), Bernd Bittner (drums) and Arnfried Drache (flute, saxophone). From the mid-1970s, Theo Schumann turned back to jazz, playing with the Theo Schumann Combo and the Theo Schumann Jazz Formation at the same time. In 1977 the band produced their fourth and final LP. But their musical climax had already passed. At the beginning of 1980 Theo Schumann devoted himself exclusively to jazz. He gave his last concert on September 26, 1989 in the Hygiene Museum in Dresden .
