Theo Schumann

Theo Schumann (born July 24, 1928 (according to other information July 24, 1935) in Altenberg (Ore Mountains) ; † July 21, 1990 ) was a jazz and dance musician (piano, saxophone) and band leader in the GDR.

Life

His father Otto Schumann was a master tailor, he shaped the musical development of his son Theodor. He made sure that Schumann practiced six to seven hours a day. After completing the 8th grade, he applied to the Dresden Conservatory , where he studied clarinet and piano. After the war he played in various dance music orchestras. In 1956 he founded his first jazz quintet.

After studying classical music at the Carl Maria von Weber Academy of Music in Dresden (subjects: conducting, composition, piano and clarinet ), Schumann founded the Theo Schumann Jazz Formation in 1957 , was the band leader of several jazz bands from 1958 and composed numerous pieces.

The formation played, for example, in the Dresden Park Hotel , where jazz concerts were held every Monday. She was well known in the jazz scene and also gave guest appearances in West Berlin . She brought out two records.

Theo Schumann Combo

From 1961 to the mid-1970s Schumann headed the Theo Schumann Combo , which played both self-composed pieces - mostly instrumental dance music - and cover versions of western pieces of music (such as Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones ).

With the Theo Schumann Combo, Schumann turned to commercial pop music. He achieved great popularity within the GDR, and his pieces were often played on the radio.

Private

His marriage to Brigitte Schumann produced two children. There are two other children from another relationship.
