The magazine Neues Leben , later in the title in small letters new life (short: nl ) written, was a youth magazine in the GDR . It was published by the Central Council of the FDJ and was published by the Junge Welt publishing house .

A weekly newspaper of the FDJ had already appeared under the name New Life in 1945, but was discontinued after a few years. During a period of political thaw after the uprisings of June 17, 1953 , New Life was brought back to life.

The layout has remained essentially unchanged for decades with 64 partly colored pages in A5 format. The front page usually featured a caricature , mostly drawn by Thomas Schleusing in the 1970s and 1980s .

In terms of content, the paper tried, on the one hand, to promote political education for young people in the spirit of the GDR system. On the other hand, it addressed topics that are of direct interest to the young people, including questions of everyday life, fashion, film, music (also with interpreters from Western countries), puzzles and advice pages. The column Professor Borrmann answers questions about sexuality was well known. There were regular surveys about the most popular films or music interpreters. In addition, the magazine contained short stories , scientific and technical articles. This mixture led to the high popularity of the paper. Despite a circulation of 540,000 copies, the magazine sold out quickly at the kiosks, and subscriptions were also very difficult to obtain.

After the political change , the Pabel-Moewig publishing house initially took over the Junge Welt publishing house and also the rights to the magazine. She briefly appeared under the title neuleben . At the beginning of 1992 the magazine was discontinued, the last only 30,000 subscribers then received the magazine Coupé .
