action

The young Gerd Paulus takes refuge from the police on a factory roof. He threatens to jump off. Captain Peter Fuchs and Lieutenant Vera Arndt are alerted to stop him. Looking back, it becomes clear how the situation came about.

Gerd Paulus began to study medicine at the urging of his father. Because of laziness and exam fraud, he was forcibly de-registered and since then has gotten through life more badly than well. He quit working as a carer because he didn't want to look after old people. He doesn't want to work in construction, after all he has a high school diploma. He meets the single worker Elfie Bösler, with whom he is staying. However, she soon realizes that he is only taking advantage of her. Since he still brings money home, she fears that he has become a criminal. In fact, Gerd pretends to be a department store detective and collects money from people who tried to steal goods. At some point it gets too much for Elfie and she throws him out.

Gerd cannot go to his father because he has renounced his son. At first he tries to find a place as a supposed doctor with Ursula, whom he recently lent money at the department store. Their friend Dr. However, Mauser realizes that Gerd is a fraud. A short time later, Gerd robbed Dr. Mauser's apartment and steals his business cards and some prescriptions. On another tour as a fake department store detective, he turns the singer Rosalinde Binetti off and spontaneously pretends to be a fan of her who only used the detective scam to get into conversation with her. He pretends to be Dr. Mauser out. However, when the nervous Rosalinde wants to get a prescription from him before a performance, he randomly prescribes her a drug. During her appearance, Rosalinde collapses and is taken to hospital a little later with symptoms of poisoning.

Gerd has started work as a street vendor. This is also where the police find him, who have been on his tail for a long time. A trick he used when breaking into Dr. Mauser's house came from the former prisoner Hans Erich Franzke. He was one of the men Gerd spoke to in the department store. Back then he had told him about the break-in. On the run from the police, Gerd runs onto the skyscraper roof. The investigators have since found out who Gerd is. They bring Ursula and later Elfie up on the roof, who are supposed to persuade Gerd to turn back. Gerd pauses, confused, only when the safety net is secretly installed. The investigators use the situation to overwhelm him and lead the raging Gerd away.
