Inti-Illimani is a Chilean musical group that has existed in various compositions since 1967. The name is composed of "Sun" (Inti) in Quechua and "Golden Eagle" (Illimani) in Aimara .
history
In 1967 students from the Universidad Técnica del Estado (today: Universidad de Santiago de Chile, USACH) founded the group, under the influence of the neo-folklore movement Nueva Canción Chilena, which was founded by Violeta Parra and Víctor Jara . Their work was musically based on the folklore of the South American countries (especially the Andean folklore), in terms of content they positioned themselves clearly to the left and supported the election campaign and government of the socialist Salvador Allende . During the military coup in 1973, Inti-Illimani was on a tour of Italy and members were denied re-entry. The group spent in exile in Italy until 1989, during which time they achieved a high level of awareness around the world through many tours and the solidarity movement with Chile.
In addition to a solid core of members, which in the 70s and 80s included the musical director Horacio Salinas, the brothers Jorge and Marcelo Coulon, Horacio Durán, José Seves and the Ecuadorian Max Berrú, musicians repeatedly joined forces for a limited group Time of the group. From 1993, when Max Berrú left the group, a phase of rejuvenation began. In 2004 only the Coulón brothers were “left”, but some of the other musicians had been part of the group for many years.
The crisis came when the ex-members Salinas, Seves and Durán, after more or less successful individual careers, teamed up with other musicians in 2004 and claimed to be the "true Inti-Illimani" because they are the authors of the most important compositions. Because the Coulón group did not accept this, a lawsuit broke out. As a result of mediation , the musicians around Salinas can now call themselves "Inti-Illimani Histórico".
