Bell, Book & Candle is a German pop band .

history

The band was founded in 1994 in Berlin . Founding members are Jana Groß, as well as Andreas Birr and Hendrik Röder, who have already played together in the GDR band Rosalili .

After two and a half years the label Turbobeat (today Valicon) / BMG showed an interest in the band. The first single Rescue Me was released in 1997, which made it into the top 3 of the German, Austrian and Swiss charts . It has been awarded platinum in Germany and Austria and gold in Sweden and Spain.

For the album Read My Sign , which followed in 1998 , the American singer Sheryl Crow contributed the title Destiny .

For the band's third album, The Tube , the singles Catch You and In The Witching Hour were released in 2001 , a duet with the musician / MC Romano , who is also named as a copyright co-author. Bell, Book & Candle played in the opening act of Germany tours of Whitney Houston and Roxette .

In 2003 the fourth album Prime Time was released by the Bertelsmann Book Club , after which Bell, Book & Candle left BMG Berlin. In 2005 they released the fifth album Bigger and the single Universe on Puhdys- own label Multirecords .

In 2006, in cooperation with Martin Engler from the band Mono Inc., the song Mein Leben was created . It ran as the soundtrack for the ARD / WDR series The Best of My Life , which was filmed based on a column by Axel Hacke in the Süddeutsche Zeitung and the book summarized from it.

Bell, Book & Candle have been the owners of Edition Minuu at EMI Publishing in Hamburg since 2005 and of the onik-music label since 2009 .

In 2009 Bell, Book & Candle recorded an unplugged CD at Stern Meissen Studio Berlin; 3 Days Under Pressure contains 13 songs from 15 years of band history.

In 2014 Bell, Book & Candle released a second unplugged CD, Remainder . On it you will find, among other things, a version of the song Universe , which was recorded as a duet with Marian Gold by Alphaville in the Kesselhaus of the Berlin Kulturbrauerei , as well as a version of the title Fire & Run with Volker Schrott on saxophone. The song An den Ufern der Nacht - a cover version of the Puhdys - can also be heard on the album.

In 2015 the band's first DVD was released under the title 20 Years of Bell, Book & Candle - Live from the Christophoruskirche in Berlin, December 2013 .

In autumn 2016 the band began composing and writing the songs for their German-language album Wie wir sind , which was released in March 2018 on the Airforce1 Berlin / Electrola Munich label, the first single of which had the same title. The singles love song and I'm like none were decoupled in the second half of 2018. Like all previous albums, this album was produced in collaboration with producer Ingo Politz and co-producer Lukas Schaaf at Beng-Music Berlin. In 2018 the film "How we are - the story of Bell, Book + Candle" was made, a 45-minute documentary that was broadcast on MDR in August 2018. The current album "WWS Unplugged" contains an excerpt from the current live program with mostly German-language songs and was released in December 2019.

  • A video was produced for the single Fire & Run , directed by Kai Sehr , which was put on the index by MTV for inciting arson.

Band name

The name of the band, in English 'bell, book and candle', refers to a method of excommunication of people who have committed extremely grave sins. The book therefore stands for 'Bible'.
