Marian Gold (* 26. May 1954 in Herford as Hartwig Schierbaum ) is a German musician , who as co-founder and lead singer of the band Alphaville became known in the 1980s.

biography

Gold's father owned a heating factory in Herford . After graduating from high school in 1973 and a dishonorable discharge from the Bundeswehr as a soldier, Gold moved to West Berlin in 1976 , where he was temporarily homeless and part of the squatter scene. In 1980 he moved to Münster and made his first musical attempts in the seven-member artist collective Nelson Community (1981). In 1982 he founded the pop trio Forever Young with Bernhard Lloyd and Frank Mertens , from which the band Alphaville emerged in 1983 .

The trio's synth-pop was mainly dominated by gold, whose androgynous appearance was influenced by David Bowie and Roxy Music . The breakthrough came in 1984 with the first single Big in Japan , which became a top 10 hit first in Germany and then across Europe. The follow-up hits Sounds Like a Melody and Forever Young were then released , with the latter hit in particular, with its numerous cover versions, giving him financial independence to this day thanks to royalties . In 1985 the band moved to Berlin.

In 1986 he performed free of charge at the Anti-WAAhnsinns Festival against the planned Wackersdorf reprocessing plant . After further albums and multimedia projects, Gold worked as a solo artist in the 1990s. In 1992 the solo album So Long, Celeste was released . In 1996 followed with United, the second solo album produced by Rupert Hine , which was a moderate commercial success.

Gold has also performed live under the name Alphaville since 1993, but this has been rejected by band members at the time, Bernhard Lloyd, Frank Mertens and Ricky Echolette. The band continues to release songs, albums and remixes, which are primarily distributed over the Internet. After Bernhard Lloyd left in 2003, Gold is the last remaining Alphaville founding member.

Gold also realized solo projects: In 2001 he appeared with the band Sputnik Roadhouse in the television film Klassentreffen - Mordfall unter Freunde ( Sat.1 ) and toured Germany in 2002 with The Nokia Night of the Proms . In 2003 he sang the "ambassador" in the opera L'invenzione degli Angeli / The Invention of the Angel by Klaus Schulze and Hermann Schneider. In 2005 he recorded his song Für Dich in a duet with the Hanoverian DJ Kai Hawaii , which is included in the online computer game Dark Age of Camelot . In 2018 he was a participant in the TV show Sing my Song - The Exchange Concert .

Gold is the father of seven children from four different mothers. He is married and lives in Berlin.
