De Randfichten are a folk music group from Johanngeorgenstadt in the Ore Mountains . Since it was founded in 1992, the band has seen several line-up changes. With her version of the folksong is old Holzmichl still alive ...? In 2004 they achieved great success in the German single charts and became known outside of the popular music scene.

Career

Before the "Holzmichl"

Michael "Michl" Rusty
Thomas "Lauti" Lauterbach

In 1992 Thomas "Rups" Unger and Michael "Michl" Rostig founded the Original Arzgebirgschen Rand spruces . The name peripheral spruce means the trees on the edge of a forest that are particularly exposed to the effects of the weather and therefore have to be particularly strong and resistant. Unger and Rostig initially played mostly in a private setting. From 1995 they were supported for two years by Doris Mühlig († 2004) on guitar. In August 1996 they first appeared on television ( MDR ). In 1997 Thomas “Lauti” Lauterbach joined the group that has been called De Randfichten since 2000 .

The debut album Do whistle dr Fuchs… was released in 1997. The fox became the trio's mascot and thus (in stuffed form) a popular accessory for fans of the group. After several appearances in regional television programs, including in Achim's hit parade , De Randfichten was awarded the prize named after Herbert Roth as the best young band by the MDR in 2000. In 2001 they wrote the music for the MDR docu-soap Ski Heil am Fichtelberg . The following year they founded their own record label, Rafi Records .

The "Holzmichl"

With the single Lebt denn dr alte Holzmichl noch…?, Which reached third place in the German single charts , the group became known throughout Germany in 2004.

The song from Holzmichel is an old folk song that is widespread in various text versions in many parts of Germany. The oldest known version comes from the Kaiserslautern area .

The song owes its character as a mood song, which is largely responsible for its success outside of the usual folk music audience, to the fact that the audience pulls both arms in the air at the line of text "Yes, he's still alive" and thus actively involved become. After the song was played at numerous winter sports events such as the 2004 Biathlon World Championships in the winter of 2003/04 , it gained national fame. It was released as a single in February 2004, which was largely boycotted by many radio and music television stations. Nevertheless, the song became the best-selling German-language single of 2004. From February 16, 2004 to March 7, 2005, it was represented in the official sales charts for a total of 56 weeks, making it one of the most successful German singles ever. Both the single and the accompanying album achieved platinum status.

With the Holzmichl , De Randfichten also reached an audience outside the folk music scene. Among other things, they appeared as the first folk music group in the programs Top of the Pops and The Dome and marketed merchandising items like the one in Seiffen / Erzgeb. produced Holzmichl - Smokers .

The popularity of the spruce trees, especially through their song Holzmichl , met with various reactions. A Chemnitz entrepreneur had T-shirts and stickers with the inscription Kill the Holzmichel expelled, which he was forbidden by a court after a process initiated by the spruce trees. A parody of the spruce trees in the NDH area with the name De Randgruppe also entered the charts in December 2004 with the title Holzmichel - The Answer .

After the "Holzmichl"

Marion Frank alias De Orgelpfeif

On February 12, 2005, De Randfichten achieved sixth place for the Free State of Saxony at the first Bundesvision Song Contest entitled Now the party is really going on . At the beginning of 2006 a new version of the number one hit from 1964 by Peter Lauch & the Rainpfeifern followed with Das Comes vom Rowing . In 2007 De Randfichten celebrated their 15th stage anniversary. On June 15, 2007 they released an anniversary single and on July 7th and 8th they organized an anniversary party on the natural stage in Greifensteine . After a creative break in 2009, the band returned in 2010 as Randfichten (now without the "De") with a new CD and the cover of the Hasenscheisse song Rups am Grill at Koch Universal Music and a revised stage program. At the end of 2011 they not only released the single Crottendorfer Raacherkerzllied on their own label Rafi Music, but were also back at EMI Music. In addition, the "De" is again part of the band name. On January 6, 2012 the single Du kleine Fliege was released in stores and as a download. The album Aufgewurzelt followed at the end of January . Then De Randfichten started the anniversary tour for their 20th stage anniversary.

The avowed Christian Thomas Unger released a solo CD in autumn 2012 under the title Everything I need, a "Praise to the Lord", a direct reaction to the fact that he overcame fear and panic attacks through his relationship with God.

Thomas Unger withdrew from the band in mid-2014 for personal and health reasons. The trio had their last appearance together on June 21st. The remaining members announced that they would continue as a singer together with Marion Frank alias De Orgelpfeif .

In 2018, Thomas Lauterbach also decided to leave the group; He had his last appearance with the band at the Randfichten Fanfest on June 2, 2018 in Freiberg. Shortly thereafter, René Schröder was selected through a casting as the new guitarist of the Rand Spruces.

Toni Kraus is Unger's son.
