The private brewery Schwerter Meißen GmbH is a beer brewery in Meißen . It is considered the oldest private brewery in Saxony.
history
The Meißen brewery, first mentioned in 1460 , was bought by the Hirschstein brewery owner Eduard Bahrmann in 1868 . His sons, who continued the company, built a new brewery in Cölln in 1897 . At the beginning of the 20th century this company operated as Schwerter Brauerei AG .
The company was taken over by Wilhelm Wohlers in 1953, and until its nationalization in 1972 the brewery operated as Schwerter Brauerei Wohlers KG . From 1972 the brewery was called VEB Felsenkeller Brauerei Meißen - operating part Schwerterbrauerei part of the Dresden beverage combine .
After the reprivatisation in 1990, a new brewery was built in 1997 in the Meißner district of Zaschendorf .
Eric Schäffer (owner of Oppacher Mineralquellen ) bought the Meißner Schwerter brewery in 2009 and continues it as a family business. Today around 25,000 hectoliters of beer are brewed in the brewery every year.
For the 555th anniversary of the brewery, a special postage stamp was issued by the postal company PostModern in 2015 .
