Achim's hit parade was a popular musicians 'competition based on an idea by Hansjoachim Seiferth, who was already responsible for the Oberhof farmers' market . The show was moderated by Achim Mentzel . From 1989 to 1991 it was broadcast on the television of the GDR (later DFF) and from 1992 to 2006 on MDR .

Eight artists competed for the title of musician king every month . The audience initially voted by postcard; From March 2004, voting was possible directly via TED and televoting . At the end of the year, all the musical kings competed to be elected as the annual winner of the musical emperor. Musician princes and princesses up to the age of 16 competed once a year in December. Achim's hit parade toured from 1999 to 2003 with hundreds of fans from Germany to the Stubai Valley , South Tyrol and on the Danube from Passau to Budapest .

After 215 episodes, the series was discontinued in December 2006.
