Keel is a song by German folk metal - and medieval rock - band Subway to Sally . The piece is the second single from their ninth studio album Bastard and winner of the Bundesvision Song Contest 2008 .
Creation and artwork
The single was produced by Georg Kaleve and mastered by UE Nastasi. The single was released under the music label Nuclear Blast . On the cover of the maxi single - next to the artist name and song title - you can see an upside down shipwreck . The artwork and photography of the cover picture are from Tinka and Ronald Reinsberg.
Publication and promotion
The first publication of On Kiel took place in 2007 as a promotional single in Germany. The regular maxi single was released on February 1, 2008 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland . In addition to Auf Kiel , the maxi single also contains the songs Voices and Umbra as B-side . At the same time as the regular maxi single was released, another promo single with a live version of the song was released. The live recordings come from a concert in the old slaughterhouse in Dresden during the Bastard tour on December 28, 2007. The maxi single was also available as a supplement to the “Auf Kiel Edition” of Subway to Sally's studio album Bastard . An official music video was not made.

Musically, the song moves in the field of folk metal and medieval rock . The song is about a seaman who “laid his ship on the keel”, i.e. decommissioned it, but occasionally struggles with this decision.

Bundesvision Song Contest 2008
Subway to Sally won the Bundesvision Song Contest 2008 for their home state Brandenburg with one point ahead of the Thuringian musician Clueso with the song Keinen Centimeter (146 points). During the points awarding of all 16 federal states , the two opponents set themselves apart relatively early on with a small gap in front of their fellow competitors, they constantly alternated at the top, but in the end Subway to Sally was able to make the final spurt with two points more in the last point awarding claim for yourself. In addition to their native Brandenburg, they also got full points from North Rhine-Westphalia . This was the fourth edition of the Bundesvision Song Contest .
For promotional purposes, each artist shoots an election commercial for participation in the BuViSoCo. This shows live excerpts from Subway to Sally during their bastard tour and fans calling for the victory of Subway to Sally.
To this day, Subway to Sally hold the record with the lowest gap between first and second place in the history of the contest. At the same time, Auf Kiel is the BSC winning title with the worst chart position in the German single charts.

Kiel reached position 44 in the single charts in Germany and stayed in the charts for a total of five weeks. For Subway to Sally this is already the third chart success in the German single charts after Falscher Heiland and Sieben . To date, none of the band's single has been able to rank higher in Germany.
