Engelskrieger is the seventh studio album by the band Subway to Sally , it was released in 2003 on the Motor Music label . It represented a stylistic change for the band, fans and the press compared to its predecessors.
style
Musically, this expressed itself in a hardness not known for the band, the electric guitars are clearly in the foreground. The texts, generally socially and socially critical , deal with child abuse ( evening song , little sister ), politics ( False Savior ), religion ( Occident ), euthanasia ( 2000 miles under the sea ), AIDS ( immortal ), attitude towards life and body cult ( bone ship ) as well self-injurious behavior ( scars ). On the other hand, themes that seem medieval, as they appeared again and again on previous albums, were completely dispensed with.
success
Commercially the album was very successful. It came to number 9 in the German album charts. For Subway to Sally, this meant the highest chart success to date. The next album Nord Nord Ost was even more successful.

criticism
- Michael Edele wrote for laut.de in March 2003 : “There should certainly be quite a few astonished faces. Some might even turn their backs on the folk metallers Subway To Sally after this album or talk about a sell-out. Everyone has to decide for themselves whether this accusation is justified. While ' Herzblut ' was still an unequivocal matter for every fan, 'Angel Warrior' presents itself as a very double-edged sword. The question that Subway To Sally has to put up with in any case is: What does all this have to do with medieval rock? "
