Wedding is the fifth studio album by the Potsdam medieval rock band Subway to Sally . It was published by BMG / Ariola in 1999 .

Music genre

Compared to the previous album Bannkreis, the guitars sound louder and more distorted; where before the guitars complemented each other with the medieval instruments, these now alternate more often. The oboe , bagpipes and other instruments take a back seat. However, the album does not completely dispense with the band's old style elements. The song Minne works completely without guitars (vocals, oboe, hurdy-gurdy, mandolin, violin, kettledrum and trumpet). On the other hand, the case of The Sacrifice and the Hangman's Bride completely dispenses with medieval instruments.

Details of the lyrics

Bodenski's lyrics on this album are less cryptic and scrambled, but still very metaphorical. Topics that have always accompanied the band in one way or another are criticism of the church, love and passion, and medieval customs.

A rude awakening puts the promises of the Bible and the Crusades in the pillory, lures unbelievers or the ignorant to perdition (" [...] reach for the snake, all its poison has long since dried up [...] ")

The rose in the water is the poetically portrayed story of a woman who walked into the water from a wounded love that was so great that nature around her mourns with and for her. The motif and parts of the text were borrowed from Georg Heym's poem Ophelia I. The chorus reads “ Der Liebsten die Roten (Rosen), Die Weißen den Toten ” - this could already be seen as a reference to the band's next studio album, Herzblut . This is finally in red and white. According to co-producer Ingo Hampf, Die Rose im Wasser is one of the most difficult compositions the band has ever written.

Executioner's bride describes a meeting of the people to execute a woman who was ostracized for killing her unborn child. The actually cruel act of execution is ironically referred to in the song as a celebration or wedding. The chorus is based on the text of the hymn " Power up the door ", originally from East Prussia .

Sabbath describes a ritual act of love or marriage. In terms of the album title, it is the central song on the record.

Minne is a love song that is based on the medieval minnesang .

Day of Vengeance describes the apocalypse and conjures up the fighting spirit and the will to survive.

The victim is the torturer's plaintive, pleading plea to his master not to punish him for his compassion for the victim, knowing that this will be of no use.

Without love describes in pictures the mental decline that happens to a girl when passion is confused with love. First of all a fever, which grips the body the first time, and cold " from head to toe " after the fifth came and went and seduced her again without love.

Insurrection takes on the proverbial image of the wolf in sheep's clothing to accuse the shepherd who wants to move the flock to stand still and put them off for the next life - a metaphorical accusation against the church that can no longer offer protection from the dangers of this time. Aufstand is the only Subway-to-Sally song in which drummer David Pätsch was involved as a composer. Accordingly, the piece also has a long outro with a lot of drums.

Müde is the only track on the album that is melancholy and gentle. It rejects belief in a desolate world. Musically it is similar to the rose in the water : soft, delicate guitar picks during the verses, full use of instruments during the choruses.

illustration

The layout of the album cover undergoes a fundamental change for the first time with the wedding , away from the usual paths. For the first time, no horned creature appears on the cover, but a naked female torso from the rear, which turns into a skeleton and floats in front of a red-black, cloud-covered sky. The band logo has also been changed for the first time: the typical lettering with the connected letters W and A in Subway and S and A in Sally still exists, but the lettering is now slimmer and looks like it has been printed on rough papyrus, torn out. Furthermore, the "O" at to has a point in the middle. This spelling will be used on the next two albums, Schrei! and heart and soul . In the photos in the booklet, the musicians are clad in little black leather and lit by candlesticks, or they appear between the remains of a castle wall. The woman-to-bones motif reappears on the back of the album, where it appears to hover over Eric Fish's hand, who is staring at it in amazement.
