Evangelical Sisterhood of Mary Darmstadt
The Evangelische Marienschwesterschaft eV is an evangelical sister community in Darmstadt-Eberstadt . The community is also known as the Darmstadt Sisterhood of Mary .
founding
The Sisterhood of Mary was founded in the post-war period in 1947 as part of a "revival" by mother Basilea Schlink (Klara Schlink), the sister of theology professor Edmund Schlink , together with mother Martyria Madauss (Erika Madauss) and the superintendent of the Methodist Church in Riedinger. “New life from rubble” - created and built up after the complete destruction of Darmstadt.
Francis Brothers
Since 1967 a small brotherhood has been affiliated with the Sisterhood of Mary, the "Evangelical Canaan-Francis Brotherhood".
theology
The sisters were involved in ecumenism and Christian-Jewish dialogue from an early age . With regard to the Jews, the idea of atonement played a role from the very beginning: on behalf of the German people, the sisters wanted to set a sign of reconciliation between Christians and Jews. On the occasion of a trip to Israel by the Sisters of Mary in 1958, it was said that they would pray “an hour every night for the State of Israel and its inhabitants”. While the Sisters of Mary were considered progressive in the 1950s , today they are more likely to be perceived as conservative- evangelical , although their teaching and appearance have barely changed. They are now part of what is known as Christian Zionism and appear again and again at pro-Israel demonstrations and rallies in the Rhine-Main area.
criticism
The Sisters of Mary came under fire early on. They were accused of legalism, re-Catholicisation or heresy by liberal-Protestant or evangelical sides, others condemned them for charismatic gifts. Two former sisters published a “dropout report” at the end of the 1990s, which was lively discussed. One of the two previous sisters, Marianne Jansson, also wrote a theological master's thesis on the Sisters of Mary, submitted to Helsinki University .
