Kreuzfeuer is the tenth studio album by the group Subway to Sally . It was released on March 27, 2009 on the Nuclear Blast label .

General

Originally the album should have a title like "restless" or "restless".

The band played the song Besser du rennst at various concerts before the album was released, and a video of this song was shot very early and released to the public. In the weeks before the album was released, short music excerpts from all tracks on the CD were published on the official website, at the end of which a comment by lead singer Eric Fish can be heard. In addition, a four-part making-of of the album was successively published there.

The tour to the album began on April 16, 2009 in Bielefeld and ended on May 2 in Leipzig. The band has also announced some festival appearances in the summer and a Christmas tour towards the end of the year. There will also be a second acoustic tour called Nackt II at the beginning of 2010 , which should be based on the album.

Music and lyrics

With this anniversary album, the band released a work that takes up elements from older albums and yet has its own musical note. It is based on his previous album Bastard , albeit underweight, and much more on much older albums such as Bannkreis or especially on the very "hard" album Engelskrieger , which initiated a new musical path for the band with its strong metal elements.

The folky elements fade into the background with Kreuzfeuer, especially in the songs Einsam und Aufstieg , on the other hand the focus is more on oriental elements, like in the songs Krähenkönig and Judaskuss . However, the album also contains songs that are based on older, more folky albums, such as The Hunt Begins and So Far, So Close . Thus the opinion matured that the work was a good cross-section through the band's history, which nevertheless contains many new elements. In contrast to all previous albums, for example, the focus is mainly on the choruses, the verses take a back seat. In addition, for the first time a rather exotic instrument is used, the Geyerleier .

Ascent is a reflection of society that pushes itself higher and higher and only recognizes success until it "burns its wings like Icarus" and falls back to earth. Judaskuss looks at the betrayal of Jesus from the light that without the betrayal of Judas Jesus would not have died on the cross and that Christian culture would not exist in its present form. This consideration happens without religious judgment, most of the band members are non-religious. Better you run , the first single, which is very rocky compared to the other tracks on the album and is felt to be quite atypical, illuminates the opinion that standing still is fatal. You have to reflect on how your own life has gone so far and whether you are happy. If not, you may have to leave everything and run. In So Far, So Close , the case is addressed when you feel very close to a person and at the same time feel a deep distance or lack of understanding. The hunt begins describes a hunting scene that is reminiscent of old works by the band, it is simply about "hunter" and "prey". Lonely is aimed at those people who want to escape from a society or a situation and "want to perish alone", a very self-centered and bitter attitude. The next song, the band's first duet, Come to My Sleep , was recorded with singer Sotiria Schenk of the band Eisblume , who is known for a cover version of Subway to Sally's song Eisblumen . She takes on the hopeful part ("dry my tears") and Eric Fish the evil, devastating part ("I'll make you new tears"). The acoustic piece Angelus focuses less on the text than on the multilayered violin runs. Here, the view of a desired person is addressed by the lover, who praises it in the highest tones, but is not satisfied with the happiness he experiences, because he cannot stop questioning everything and thus loses everything. Krähenkönig relies heavily on oriental sounds, the electric guitar is not used at all. It is about an abandoned king who longs for his former life. One can never reduce to the statement of the refrain, not to back down and not to give up one's individuality. The second, very ballad-like acoustic piece, Hidden, deals with the issue of doing the right thing at the right time. Father , a bombastic piece, criticizes the so-called " submarine Christians " who only rely on their religion when things are bad for them or when a holiday is coming up.
