Bastard is the ninth studio album by the group Subway to Sally . It was released on October 19, 2007 on the Nuclear Blast label . The album reached number 7 on the album charts in its first week of sales.

General

Before their release, the band played the songs Meine Seele brennt and Auf Kiel at various festivals. The video for Auf Kiel was shot at the 2007 Wacken Open Air . A few days before the album was released, the lyrics and short music excerpts from all tracks on the CD were published on the official homepage.

In the November issue of Metal Hammer magazine , Bastard was album of the month.

The album tour began on October 26th in Vienna and ended on November 11th in Berlin. A Christmas tour followed, which began on December 14th and ended on December 30th. During this tour, another live DVD called Schlachthof was recorded, which was released on September 5, 2008.

Music and lyrics

Compared to previous publications, it is an attempt to blend different styles even further . This can be seen both on the level of the individual songs and in the large form. It continues the reduction of metal elements already recognizable in Nord Nord Ost (2005). Only puppeteers , voodoo and undiscovered land continue to be perceived as "hard". Dance on the volcano uses Irish folk elements. Ballads such as Wehe Stunden and In der Stille as well as the choral singing in Canticum Satanae give the album an overall variety.

My soul burns is a poetic description of a deep despair, but ends with the certainty of rising again like " Phoenix from the ashes ". The puppeteer serves as a metaphor for a person who manipulates people ("You can't resist me, you should walk on my strings"). On Kiel is primarily meant to withdraw from the stressful touring life of a musician, the song can, however, relate to any situation of retiring after an unsteady life, in which, however, the longing to set off again occasionally arises. Umbra is a very complex game with the topic of "shadow" and describes how other people are suppressed when one lives egotistically - standing / living in the shadow of another. Voodoo is arguably the most aggressive title on the CD, both musically and lyrically, that describes a voodoo curse (“I am your worst dream”). The ballad woe hour describes the end of a relationship from which there is no other way out than to break up - with all accusations of guilt, but also the offer of forgiveness. The drum is an accusation against war that a young man lets himself be drawn into. Almost a child, he follows the call of the drum and then experiences all the horror on the battlefield, the pursuit of fame and honor has given way to naked fear. Undiscovered land was created under the impression of reading "Measuring the World" by Daniel Kehlmann . After everything has apparently been discovered, deciphered and measured, it shows that it is above all the next person who remains undiscovered. Hohelied is - like Das Rätsel II on Nord Nord Ost - again a creed of one's own work woven from puns with quotes from older titles. Canticum Satanae is a short, self-deprecating choral singing, Dance on the Volcano a blunt invitation to dance. Fatum describes the fate of an illegitimate child (" bastard "), his alienation in the face of the constantly changing husbands of his mother, the emptiness that remains when one is cheated out of a harmonious family life. The album closes with the wistful ballad In der Stille . The song describes the fears and hopes of a relationship in poetic images.

A comparison of perspective and dialectics

Voodoo uses oriental samples from a Bulgarian singer. The aim was to build up an exotic atmosphere, which is often interpreted as a musical cross-reference to the song Die Schlacht ( Herzblut , 2001), which uses similar samples: Does The Battle treat an inner conflict with one's own weaknesses and doubts, which (under effort) is won, there is a protagonist in Voodo who has apparently lost this battle and assumes “pure aggression” as a maxim. Similarly, the language content also takes a passive position in some cases. In the active (ending) positions, some see an externally induced character who postulate and stimulate action to resolve friction. Compared to "earlier positions", this is sometimes perceived as a change, since in the above publications a self-induced change was the premise for change in the outside world. References to current events, which the Angel Warrior (2003) made, are largely dispensed with here and even more so than in the Nord Nord Ost (2005). An intensified emotionalized and reflexive component takes its place.

So some argue for a perspective change from "from oneself" to "on oneself" and a dialectical one from "through music" to "with music".
