biography

Michael Roman grew up in Greater Los Angeles and moved to eastern New York in the mid-1970s . There he sprayed his graffiti on house walls at night and worked as a bicycle courier during the day. Because he often had to leave parcels there, he got an insight into Andy Warhol's artist workshop , who had a strong influence on him. In the 80s, Roman was a sought-after artist in the New York club and punk scene. He designed the interior walls of hip bars like the Pyramid Club and sprayed announcements for events as street art on the pavement.

Carlos Santana became aware of the artist in the 90s . Michael Roman designed the cover of Santana's Milagro LP , designed the sets for various tours of the band and printed their stage clothing. Roman also worked for the Doughboys , Madonna and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones . For Die Toten Hosen he designed several record covers, tour posters and a large part of the clothing for the band members personally or for merchandising .

Michael Roman moved to San Francisco , where he passed on his experience to art students as director of the Mission Cultural Center. Michael died on December 26, 2016 after a serious illness.
