Haffmans Publishing House

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Haffmans Verlag was a Zurich publisher . It was founded in 1982 by Gerd Haffmans , Thomas Bodmer and Urs Jakob and published around 700 books by 2001.

history

Gerd Haffmans was previously an editor at Diogenes Verlag . For Haffmans, one motive for founding his own publishing house was that he could not get authors like Robert Gernhardt or Hans Wollschläger through with Diogenes Verlag . The first author at Haffmans Verlag was then Robert Gernhardt. Other authors from the New Frankfurt School , such as FW Bernstein or Eckhard Henscheid , and later Max Goldt , were also published by Haffmans. Arno Schmidt received a large-scale edition, which was continued by Suhrkamp Verlag . Anglo-Saxon authors such as Julian Barnes , David Lodge and David Sedaris joined them. Another focus of the publishing house was the new edition and new translation of classics , such as Arthur Conan Doyle , Gustave Flaubert , Rudyard Kipling , Edgar Allan Poe , Arthur Schopenhauer , William Shakespeare and Laurence Sterne . A special feature of the publisher was the sophisticated and sometimes elaborate design of the books by the manufacturer and managing partner Urs Jakob. In 2001 the publisher went bankrupt . Haffmans continued his publishing program from 2002 at Zweiausendeins in the Haffmans Verlag series . From 2011 he worked - together with Urs Jakob - at the Berlin publishing house Haffmans & Tolkemitt , whose sole partner was Till Tolkemitt , who also ran the publishing house Rogner & Bernhard . At the end of 2015, both publishers filed for bankruptcy.
