Maryse Condé (born February 11, 1937 in Pointe-à-Pitre , Guadeloupe ) is a French writer with Caribbean roots.

Life

She was born the youngest in a family with eight children. Even during her school days, she found a taste for literature, especially English fiction . In 1953 she went to Paris for training, where she completed her studies of comparative literature at the Sorbonne in 1975 as a docteur des lettres with a thesis on stereotypes of blacks in West Indian literature ( Stéréotypes du noir dans la littérature antillaise) .

In 1958 she married Mamadou Condé, an actor from Guinea . Together with their four children, they were mainly traveling in West Africa. Maryse Condé drew the inspiration for her bestseller Segu - The Walls of Clay (1984) in Mali .

From 1960 to 1964 Maryse Condé worked at various schools and language institutes in Conakry , Guinea; until 1968 she moved to Accra , Ghana and Saint-Louis , Senegal.

It was included in the anthology Daughters of Africa , edited in 1992 by Margaret Busby in London and New York.

After teaching at the Sorbonne and various other universities from 1980 to 1985, she taught francophone African literature at Columbia University in New York until 2004 . With her second husband, the translator Richard Philcox, she lives alternately in New York City and on Guadeloupe.

Awards

In 1988 she received the LiBeraturpreis for Segu - The Walls of Clay .

In 1993 she was the first woman to receive the Puterbaugh Prize for her complete works .

Condé was announced on October 12, 2018 as the winner of the "Alternative Literature Prize of the New Academy". This prize was awarded once on December 9th by Swedish cultural workers in response to the crisis in the Swedish Academy and the resulting failure to award the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2018.
