Kamala Markandaya

Kamala Markandaya (born June 23, 1924 in Mysore , India , † May 16, 2004 in London ) was an Indo-British writer and journalist.

Kamala Markandaya, actually Kamala Purnaiya Taylor, was born Kamala Purnaiya in Barain, a small town near Mysore in India in 1924. She studied history in Madras and then worked as a journalist. Alongside this work, she wrote short stories. At the age of 25 she married Bertrand Taylor, a British journalist, and emigrated with him to Great Britain in 1948, where she lived until her death.

From the 1950s onwards, she wrote novels that have been translated into numerous languages. They often described India's conflicts between tradition and modernity .

Her first novel, Nectar in a Sieve , established her literary reputation and is considered the cornerstone of Indo-English women's literature . In 1990 Kamala Markandaya was awarded the LiBeraturpreis for this work .
