Yanick Lahens

Yanick Lahens (* 1953 in Port-au-Prince , Haiti ) is a Haitian writer and radio host . She is considered to be one of the most important contemporary voices in her country and one of Haiti's leading intellectuals. After studying literature in Paris, she became a lecturer in literature at the Ecole Normale Superieure University in Port-au-Prince. Today she also publishes for radio and print media and engages in social projects for the younger generation.

Life

Yanick Lahens was born in Port-au-Prince. She completed her school education in Paris , where she later attended the Sorbonne and studied literature . She then returned to Haiti and taught at the state university École Normale Supérieure until 1995 . In 1998 she became head of the Route de l'esclange project , which dealt with slavery at the local level, especially from a cultural and scientific perspective. She was also a founding member of the Haitian Writers' Association.

She is a determined fighter against illiteracy and for youth rights.

As a presenter, she has the regular program Entre Nous . In addition to her work on books, she is also an author of articles in culture magazines in Haiti and the Antilles , such as Cultura and Boutures .

Her literary career began with essays on writers. She started writing relatively late. In 1990, her essay L'exil entre l'ancrage et la fuite: l'écrivain haitien (The Exile Between Anchoring and Flight: The Haitian Writer) was translated into English. Her first novel was Dans la maison au pere from 2000 (German as Dance of the Ancestors, 2004).

In 2002 she received the LiBeraturpreis initiative. Today she is again working as a professor at the École Normale Supérieure in Port-au-Prince and lives in Haiti's capital.

In 2010 her novel And Suddenly the Floor opens up. A journal in which she vividly chronicles the events surrounding the 2010 Haiti earthquake . The book was also published in German translation.

In 2014, her novel Bain de lune was awarded the Prix ​​Femina .
