Juergen Boos (born May 9, 1961 in Lörrach ) is a German publishing manager and has been the director of the Frankfurt Book Fair since April 2005 .

Live and act

Juergen Boos completed an apprenticeship as a publishing bookseller at Herder Verlag in the 1980s and studied marketing and organizational theory. He has taken on management positions at Droemer Knaur Verlag , Carl Hanser Verlag , Springer Science and Business Media and John Wiley & Sons . In 2005 he became director of the Frankfurt Book Fair.

As director, he is modernizing the Frankfurt Book Fair from the classic book fair to the fair for content and stories: Under his leadership, cross-industry offers such as Books at Berlinale, the Transmedia conference StoryDrive, the self-publishing area and the Frankfurt Hot Spots for digital service providers and Publishing startups. This brought him the charge in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung of redesigning the Frankfurt Book Fair into a pure “fair for the content industry”.

In 2015, Boos invited Salman Rushdie to the opening press conference at the Frankfurt Book Fair to draw attention to the increasing attacks on freedom of the word. This was heavily criticized in advance by the Iranian government. She boycotted the Frankfurt Book Fair because of Rushdie's appearance and left the Iranian national stand empty at the book fair.

Juergen Boos received an honorary doctorate from Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University on January 17, 2017 . On November 20, 2013 he was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art .

Boos is President of LITPROM (Society for the Promotion of Literature from Africa, Asia and Latin America eV), and Managing Director of LitCam (Frankfurt Book Fair Literacy Campaign). He is also a member of the Scientific Committee of the Sheikh Zayed Book Award and a member of the Akademie Deutscher Buchpreis . In February 2018 Boos was named Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres .

criticism

In September 2009, Juergen Boos was publicly criticized. Under his leadership, two Chinese dissidents who were supposed to speak at a symposium on the subject of "China and the World: Perception and Reality" were initially unloaded after massive pressure from the Chinese delegation. They took part anyway, which led to protests by the Chinese delegation. On September 15, 2009, Juergen Boos made a public statement.
