Ray-Güde Mertin
Ray-Güde Mertin (born July 19, 1943 in Marburg ; † January 13, 2007 in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe ) was a German philologist , literary agent and translator of Portuguese , Brazilian , Spanish and Hispano - American literature into German.
life and work
She passed her Abitur in 1963 at the German School in Barcelona . From 1963 to 1969 she studied German and Romance languages at the Free University of Berlin . For the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) she took up a job from 1969 to 1977 as a lecturer in São Paulo and Campinas in Brazil.
In 1978 Mertin obtained her doctorate in Romance philology at the University of Cologne with a topic on the Brazilian author Ariano Suassuna . The year before, she had moved to New York , where she worked as a freelance translator and agency for German publishers until 1982. She translated novels by the writers Clarice Lispector , António Lobo Antunes , José Saramago and João Ubaldo Ribeiro into German. In addition, she wrote papers on Portuguese and Brazilian literature in specialist journals. Mertin also made entries in Harenberg's Lexicon and in the New Literature Lexicon at Kindler.
After returning to Germany in 1982, Mertin founded an agency for the translation of literature in Bad Homburg. In 1984 she worked as a lecturer in Brazilian literature at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main , and then in 1996 she took a position as honorary professor.
As a literary agent, Mertin has represented many Portuguese-speaking writers. For a long time she was on the board of the Society for the Promotion of Literature from Africa, Asia and Latin America eV and organized many reading trips for Lusophon and Hispanic authors.
