Raduan Nassar (born November 27, 1935 in Pindorama , São Paulo ) is a Brazilian writer of Lebanese origin.

Life

His Greek Orthodox father and his Protestant mother (née Chafika Cassis) emigrated from southern Lebanon to Brazil (São Paulo) in 1920. In 1935 Raduan Nassar was born as the seventh son of the family's ten children. Their father, Joao Nassar, provided them with a solid education as a rising businessman. Nassar took courses in law, literature, sociology and philosophy. In 1963 he successfully completed his studies in philosophy . A subsequent trip to Germany ( Lüneburg ) and a visit to his parents' home in Lebanon he had to break off due to a military coup in his native Brazil.

In 1967 he founded the weekly newspaper "Jornal do Bairro", which was critical of the regime . His debut novel Lavoura arcaica ( Eng . Title: "The Patriarch's Bread") was a great success in Brazil in 1975, received several Brazilian literary prizes and was translated into several languages ​​(Spanish, French and German). Since 1982 he has said goodbye to public cultural life and lives in seclusion in the country as a cattle breeder and farmer. With a relatively narrow body of work, Nassar has achieved worldwide renown in literary circles. In 2016 the English translation of Ein Glas Wut , A Cup of Rage , made it onto the longlist of the Man Booker International Prize , and also in 2016 Nassar was awarded the Prémio Camões . In 2017 Um copo de cólera received a Prêmio Jabuti de Literatura in the category “Livro Brasileiro Publicado no Exterior”.
