Moacyr Jaime Scliar (born March 23, 1937 in Porto Alegre ; † February 27, 2011 ibid) was a Brazilian writer and doctor .

Career

Scliar was born in 1937 in the Jewish quarter of Porto Alegres in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul . In 1962 he completed his medical studies in Israel and published his first book Histórias de Médicos em Formação ( Stories of a Doctor-to-be ) in the same year, but later regretted its early publication.

In 1968 his second book was published, the short story volume O carnaval dos animais (Carnival of the Animals) , which was followed by many other stories, novels, books for children and young people and essays on various topics. Scliar is one of the most recognized writers in Brazil today. He dedicates a large part of his work to the Jewish identity in the Diaspora in general and to the Judaism of Brazil in particular. But the criticism of social grievances in Brazil also shapes Scliar's work.

In 2003 he was elected for life in the Academia Brasileira de Letras , the Brazilian Academy of Literature, Chair 31. In addition to numerous awards, he received the Brazilian literary prize Prêmio Jabuti de Literatura four times : 1988 in the short prose category for O olho enigmático , 1993 for the novel Sonhos Tropicais , 2000 for A mulher que escreveu a Bíblia and 2009 for Manual de paixão solitária .

Scliar became internationally known when Yann Martel used the basic idea of his novel Max e os Felinos ( Max and the Cats ) in his novel Life of Pi ( Shipwreck with Tiger ) without informing Scliar about it; However, Scliar refrained from filing a plagiarism lawsuit after talking to Martel.

Scliar's novels have been translated into numerous world languages, six of them also into German. He is also featured in numerous anthologies and magazines. The first monograph on Scliar's life and work was published in Germany in 1992: The Strange Nation of Moacyr Scliar by Albert von Brunn.
