Samar Yazbek

Samar Yazbek (born August 18, 1970 in Jabla ) is a Syrian journalist, civil rights activist and author.

Life

Yazbek comes from an upper -class Alawi family. She married at the age of 16, had a child and left her husband. She studied literature. She publishes novels and short stories and writes articles and scripts for television, for which she also works as a presenter. She was the editor of the online magazine "Women of Syria" (ar). Yazbek was named for the list of young Arab writers group Beirut 39 .

Yazbek works as a journalist for civil rights and women's rights in Syria. When the civil war broke out in Syria in 2011, she wrote reports and recorded statements. After she was massively intimidated by the Syrian secret service, she and her daughter fled to France in June 2011.

In 2012 she received the British PEN / Pinter Prize International writer of courage and in Sweden the Tucholsky Prize .
